Church Decorations

While the bulk of the planning and expense associated with a wedding is with the reception, when you really think about it, the actual marriage ceremony is the most important part of the entire day. As a result, many brides-to-be take extra time and care to select the perfect decorations for the church.

However, before you begin making elaborate plans for decorating the church, it is important that you pay a visit to the minister to identify what, if any, restrictions exist. It is also a good idea to take a good look around to get a good sense of the environment. Remember, it is best to not to try to make a place something it isn’t. For example, a candlelight ceremony probably won’t have the desired effect if it is being held during the early afternoon in a church that has a great deal of natural sunlight. Finally, be sure to take the season during which your wedding will occur into account; if you are planning your wedding during the Christmas or Easter season, chances are the church will already be beautifully decorated and there will be little, if anything, you will need to add. It is also important to realize that during these seasons many churches will not allow you to bring additional decorations or make any alterations to those already in place.

When additional church decorations are desired (and permitted), many brides opt for pew markers or pew bows. These versatile decorations can be as simple or elegant as you wish. Markers made from fresh-cut, silk or dried flowers and/or bows that coordinate with the bridal party’s dresses can provide the perfect finishing touch.

An alternative to pew markers and bows is to place small baskets of flowers beside the pews. While this can work in virtually any size church, it is particularly striking in churches with wide center aisles.

Another consideration to make when selecting church decorations for your wedding is the type of arrangement to place at the altar. Again, some churches have restrictions on the type and size of arrangement that can be used, so it is recommended you check before making your decision.

Remember, whether you are dealing with a church, public park, reception hall or four-star hotel there may be certain restrictions or limitations on the type of decorations you use. Taking the time to check into these rules will help reduce the chances of problems occurring down the road.
